Ken Sexton founded Kenroc Building Materials Ltd. 38 years ago, he had already invested 17 years in the building industry with Bird Construction Co. In Regina. Starting his own company, even with the conviction of its importance to the market, was not easy. "There are so many stories about that time", Sexton remembers. "The first truck I bought had no brakes. When I drove it back to the office, I had to time all the lights to make sure I didn?t cause an accident." Sexton chuckles when he recalls that the company?s first washroom was an outhouse, right in the middle of the city. Yet Sexton?s fledgling company quickly attracted customers, and inexpensive trucks were soon a thing of the past. He had already identified an industry need for a specialized drywall supplier, and set out to fill that niche. Founded in Regina in 1967, Kenroc mainly supplied contractors with drywall -- also known as gypsum board -- and quickly became their major supplier. As the business became well-established, Sexton began adding other products necessary for the completion of any construction project, from insulation to ceiling tiles, and increasingly supplied other materials to dealers as well. The first major expansion came in 1976, when Kenroc opened a second location in Saskatoon. The company also expanded into rural areas, working in concert with local lumber companies. Since then, the company has opened stores in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Prince George, Vancouver and Minneapolis. The next step was to open a buying group, in order to access the best possible prices by buying in large volumes. At first, Sexton teamed up with two other companies to form the group, but later decided to form his own. In 1985, Sexton Building Materials was born, and now has hundreds of members stretching from Quebec to B.C. The name was recently changed to The Sexton Group. Builders Choice Products Ltd., a tool supplier, became part of Sexton?s growing group of companies in 1986. The affiliate now sells tools across Canada from dozens of suppliers through a catalogue and telephone marketing system. Sexton has also set up his own trucking system and a steel stud manufacturing plant. When asked how the company has grown so steadily over the last 35 years, Sexton is characteristically modest. "I caught the rise in the market. Our company was founded just prior to the boom. Housing activity was three times what it is today." But it has obviously also taken good management, Sexton has assured the growth and stability of Kenroc and its affiliates through retained earnings and attributes much of the company's success to supplying customers with excellent products -- beginning with the flagship product, drywall. "There was no such thing as a specialized drywall supply company in 1967" says Sexton. "Ready-mix concrete was replacing on-site mixing, specialized door stores were emerging and our specialty was drywall." Today, customers demand more -- more service, more products, more convenience. Kenroc has grown by supplying them all.

We also provide ceiling systems designed and rated for fire control, ceiling tile in dozens of patterns, sizes and colors, and T bar and grid style frames in a variety of finishes. STUCCO - We offer a full and complete line of all beads, lath, trims, adhesives, insulation and color additives, as well as all of the base product requirements. Our acrylic tinting stations can also produce custom acrylics in thousands of different colors. STEEL FRAMING - Kenroc deals in galvanized roll formed framing components, such as stud, track, deep track, furring bar, resilient bar, channels, angles, and wire, in all gauges, lengths and widths. Many are formed on our own equipment. We also offer a full range of fasteners. INSULATION - We have it all: fiberglass batt insulation for both wood and steel framing in a wide variety of "R" values, blowing wool for ceilings, rockwool for sound control and as fire stops, and rigid insulation for walls and roofs. TOOLS - Tradesman quality tools used in the installation of drywall, ceilings, stucco, steel framing and insulation. We also offer many specialty tools that your average hardware store would not carry.
