Anodising is an electrolytic oxidation process in which an aluminium component is made anodic in a cell containing an aqueous, acidic electrolyte & metal cathode. When electric current is passed through the cell, the aluminium surface is converted into an adherent aluminium oxide coating, which is the aluminium substrate.
Anodising may be regarded as the artificial thickness of the thin native oxide that is always present on aluminium exposed to the atmosphere.
During anodising, oxides from the electrolyte are driven to the Aluminium surface where they penetrate the existing oxide film & combine with aluminium ions from the metal to build up aluminium oxide coating near the metal oxide interface. A non-porous barrier oxide layer, whose thickness is proportional to the applied voltage, forms initially & as an advancing frost onto the metal during the process of anodising.
Porous oxide coating soon develops the above barrier due to the dissolving action of the acid electrolyte.
The porous structure permits continued growth in thickness of the coating until equilibrium is established between formation & dissolution of the coating.
The electrolyte deposits vary according to the process cycle & ingredients used.
The porous nature of anodic coating is used to advantage in dyes, pigments, corrosion inhibitors or lubricants. Normally the porosity of the coatings is closed by the sealing process for best performance in service. The porous structure permits continued growth in thickness of the coating until equilibrium is established between formation & dissolution of the coating.
